Experiences

Soda City Market

From 9am to 1pm on Saturdays, several blocks of Columbia's Main Street transform into an artisan market. Through the years, so-called "Soda City" has exploded with new vendors ranging from artists to bakers and farmers, too. Some "day ones" still show up rain or shine year-round.

Grab a bite and a brew (coffee, that is) and wander through the vibrant displays.

Support some local businesses, while you're at it!

Painting with a Twist

Don't overlook this place. It's all about the personality here, and owner Kathy and her pro painters bring all that and more!

I've had the pleasure of working with Kathy in her studio and in mine. Something new is always mixing it up at Twist, and their date night classes are especially fun!

Bring a bottle of beer or wine and a snack, kick back, and enjoy the painting lesson!

Gem Mining at A&A Rockshop

Deep in the heart of Lexington, you'll find an experience you'd typically see starting in South Carolina's Upstate as you head to the North Carolina mountains.

A&A Rockshop has lots to offer. From teas and crystals to a unique experiences for kids of all ages, peek inside and see what you find!

I recommend checking out the gem sluicing and indoor cave mining experience.

The staff is highly knowledgeable about different aspects of gems, minerals, crystals, and more, and will ensure you have a great time!

Bierkeller

Putting this here because it really is an experience.

For those of us who love beer, food, and German culture (picture me quickly raising my hand), this is your place.

Like a true German Bierhalle, Bierkeller puts the emphasis on great, fresh brews straight from a tank in the back to a tap in the front, classic German food, and a touch of nature.

Right on the river, the sunsets here are beautiful. Lots of events will keep you coming back for new experiences each time!

Jazz at The Aristocrat

Nothing is better than live jazz, if you ask me.

SC Jazz Masterworks Ensemble plays at The Aristocrat on Fridays from 8pm to 11pm.

Grab a drink and enjoy the show!

Laura's Tea Room

A stone's throw from Columbia right up I-77, you'll feel like you're stepping back in time.

The small, historic town of Ridgeway holds hidden gems like Laura's Tea Room, a slightly Americanized version of the British type you may be familiar with.

Pick from the selection of donated hats to borrow and enjoy a plethora of delicious teas with a curated seasonal menu during high tea.

If you're short on time, stop in the cafe for a quick bite or to browse the selection of teas and unique gifts.

Goat Daddy's Farm

Ever dreamed of cuddling with baby goats? Or just looking to learn more about different types of animals?

A camel, a coatimundi, baby goats, horses, cats, a cow, emus, alpacas, a murder llama, and countless other exotic animals call Goat Daddy's home.

Goat Daddy's Farm and Animal Sanctuary in Elgin has so much to offer. Try baby goat yoga or a private tour!

If you're looking for a unique stay, book Goat Daddy's bed & breakfast!

West Columbia / Cayce Riverwalk

Up for a walk in the park? Check out the riverwalk!

My favorite place to start is in West Columbia off Alexander Rd. Or, park one stop down the road in Cayce and walk south.

In the spring and summer, you'll be greeted by the aroma of honeysuckle and a beautiful view of the rushing river.

It doesn't get much better than that!

Riverbanks Zoo

Need I say more?

Riverbanks is a nationally renowned zoo with so much to explore. Truly one of my favorites.

At Christmas, the lights at the zoo are a must-see!

Congaree National Park

The biology major in me loves a trip to Congaree every once in a while.

The ancient trees tell stories through their roots. Learn a little something about the Midlands' most unique ecosystem and the species that live there!

Try to stop by when it hasn't rained recently so you can fully experience the boardwalk.
